Taking Care of Your Mental Health After Divorce

Besides the death of a loved one, the biggest issue that people may have to deal with is a divorce. Unfortunately, any marriage – even one where the couple has been married for several decades – can end in a divorce. The only surefire way to never get divorced is to never get married in the first place.

While divorces can be amicable, many are nasty. Even when there are no hard feelings involved, ending a long-term marriage can feel like getting hit by a ton of bricks. After being married for so long, you may not know how to proceed with life as a single person.

It can be overwhelming. You may feel stuck. You may even feel anxious and depressed. But with the right tools and mindset, you can get through your divorce and come out feeling great – and maybe even better than before. Here are some ways to cope with divorce and improve your mental health.

Give Yourself a Break

All divorces are difficult. Don’t feel like you have to be a superhero and function at 100%. You’ll just burn out and make things worse. Give yourself time to heal and energize; you’ll feel so much better about yourself.

Get Support

Hopefully you have friends and family members you can lean on to help you through this difficult time. If not, there are support groups you can join. You may want to isolate yourself right now, but the truth is that shutting yourself in away from the rest of the world will make you more stressed and less focused on life.

Maintain Your Physical Health

Despite the added stress, you want to try to stay healthy during this time. Eat well and make time for exercise. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Stick with your normal routines for now and take time to relax. Deep breathing techniques can clear your mind and help you manage stress.

Explore Your Interests

Now that you’re single, you have a newfound freedom. Don’t use this time to stay at home and mope. Instead, get out and explore your interests. Take up a sport. Take classes. Look for social events in your area and attend them. You’ll feel happier, make new friends and get your mind off your divorce.

Be Positive

A divorce may seem like the end of the world, but it’s really not. It’s actually a new opportunity, so embrace it. Many people have gone through it, and you’ll make it through as well. Divorce is what you make of it, so think positively about your situation. Listen to inspiring music. Watch comedies. Hang around positive people who make you laugh. Make a list of things you can do now that you’re divorced. For example, you can now date people and develop a long-term relationship with a new partner.

 Seek Help for Your Divorce

A divorce is a tough situation that nobody wants to go through. It can have harsh financial and emotional consequences.
