Motorcyclist Dead After Being Involved In 2 Crashes

MotorcycleAccident8

Motorcycle crashes are all different. Some people survive them. Then there are those who survive an accident, only to be killed moments later in a second crash.

Two back-to-back crashes in Florida have left a motorcyclist dead and a Good Samaritan injured. The accidents occurred on the evening of October 1 in Leesburg.

A 57-year-old man from Leesburg was driving his Harley-Davidson north on County Road 473 while a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 59-year-old man from Leesburg was heading south on the same road. The driver of the Toyota was turning left into a gas station parking lot when the motorcycle T-boned the truck. The motorcycle rider was ejected.

A Good Samaritan stopped to assist the injured motorcyclist. The 51-year old woman from Leesburg exited her vehicle and was attempting to help the motorcycle rider when yet another accident occurred. A 30-year-old woman from Leesburg was driving a Buick Century on County Road 473. She was heading north when she crashed into the downed motorcycle, which was still in the road. This caused the motorcycle to go forward and collide with both the motorcycle rider and the Good Samaritan.

The motorcyclist died at the accident scene. The Good Samaritan was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Left Turns in Front of Motorcycles

Left turn accidents are often a motorcycle rider’s worst nightmare. Motorcycles are often hard to see, which means motorists who are turning left do not usually see them until it is too late. There are other reasons why drivers turn left in front of motorcycles, such as:

  • Distracted driving. It takes a lot of focus to see smaller motorcycles and judge the time to turn left. When a driver is using their phone or is distracted in some other way, they can easily cause a crash.
  • Misjudging speed. Sometimes drivers make mistakes when attempting to turn. Maybe they see the motorcycle but have made a mistake in judging the motorcycle’s speed or distance. This can lead to a crash.
  • Reckless driving. Sometimes drivers are simply reckless. They have no regard for others on the roadway. They may run stop signs and red lights. They may drive too fast. They may drive while intoxicated. They may make turns without looking for traffic. All these actions can lead to serious crashes.

Left-turn accidents are especially dangerous for motorcyclists. They often result in T-bone accidents, which can be fatal. Those who survive may suffer from catastrophic injuries, such as broken bones, head trauma, traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, and internal injuries.
