Motorcyclist Killed in Crash in Cocoa Beach

Motorcycles are fun to drive, but they don’t rank high when it comes to safety. Even a minor crash can lead to serious injuries. A crash at high speeds will likely cause fatalities.

A motorcycle crash on August 25 in Cocoa Beach has led to fatality. The accident occurred just before noon at in the 3300 block of North Atlantic Avenue, near First United Methodist Church.

A 70-year-old woman from Connecticut was making a left turn in her Volkswagen Jetta, toward the church, when a Suzuki motorcycle collided with the passenger side. The motorcycle rider, a 49-year-old man from Melbourne, was injured in the crash. He was taken to a local hospital, where later died.

Traffic in the area was blocked for several hours. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.

Causes of Motorcycle Crashes

Motorcyclists often get a bad reputation because they are seen as fast and dangerous. While some people drive motorcycles in a reckless manner, not all do. In fact, most motorcyclists are highly skilled riders who are very cautious. Riding a motorcycle requires an immense amount of focus and awareness, since other vehicles often do not pay attention to motorcycles. In fact, this is the most common cause of motorcycle crashes. Drivers of other vehicles often do not see motorcycles until right before they crash. By then, it is too late to avoid an accident.

Most motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. In two-thirds of those crashes, the other vehicle is at fault due to a violation of the motorcycle’s right of way. Only 25% of motorcycle accidents are single-vehicle crashes involving the motorcycle colliding with a fixed object or crashing due to road conditions, such as ice, rain, snow, potholes, oil slicks or other debris. However, weather contributes to just 2% of motorcycle accidents.

Vehicle failure occurs in just 3% of motorcycle accidents. Most of these incidents involve flat tires. Animals in the road are not common, accounting for just 1% of motorcycle crashes.

There are many ways in which crashes can occur. Many vehicles make left-hand turns in front of oncoming motorcycles, causing serious collisions. Tailgating is another common reason. Either vehicle may be accused of this action. Failure to yield is another way in which motorcycle crashes can occur. Again, either vehicle can cause an accident in this way.

Road rage and aggressive driving can also cause crashes. While motorcyclists can be the ones causing the road rage, it is more common for other vehicles to be the culprits, with the smaller vehicles—the motorcycles—suffering the brunt of the damage.
