Motorcyclist Killed in Wrong-Way Crash in Tampa

shutterstock_1029955816

Motorcyclists are smaller than other vehicles on the roadway. As such, they are not easily seen. Even when they can be seen by other motorists, they are often involved in crashes in other ways. For example, road rage can cause tailgating and other aggressive forms of driving. In some cases, they are hit head-on by confused, distracted or intoxicated drivers.

A motorcyclist in Florida recently died after getting hit by a car traveling in the wrong direction. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of June 19 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 at mile marker 274 in Tampa.

An 84-year-old man was heading south in the northbound lanes for unknown reasons. He was driving a Lincoln Town Car when he made a U-turn at the entrance ramp to Interstate 275. He ended up driving in the wrong direction. As a result, he swerved to avoid an oncoming car. As he swerved, he hit a motorcyclist head-on.

The motorcycle rider, a 45-year-old man, died at the accident scene. The driver of the Lincoln was hospitalized with serious injuries. The man faces criminal charges for his role in the accident. The northbound lanes of Interstate 75 were closed for several hours as police investigated.

What Causes Wrong-Way Accidents?

Wrong-way accidents account for only 3% of car accidents in the United States. However, this is a serious issue because these types of crashes are most likely to result in fatality. Several hundred people are killed in wrong-way accidents every year. Those who survive often must deal with long-term injuries, such as broken bones, head trauma, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.

There are several reasons why drivers may mistakenly drive in the wrong direction. The top cause is intoxication. Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol can affect one’s judgment. As many as 75% of wrong-way accidents are caused by intoxication.

Distracted driving is another top reason. A lack of signs and being unfamiliar with the roads can also cause motorists to travel the wrong way. Visibility issues, such as nighttime driving, fog and rain, can disorient a driver. In fact, most wrong-way crashes occur at night, between midnight and 3 a.m.

Drowsiness and fatigue can make drivers less aware of where they are going and they can easily make a wrong move. Motorists with mental health issues can also cause wrong-way crashes.
