2 Killed In Pasco County Motorcycle Accident

MotorcycleAccident20

In an instant, a motorcycle can get into a serious crash. A collision with a car can be especially deadly.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Pasco County. A motorcycle and sedan collided, killing both motorcycle riders.

The fatal accident happened on the evening of November 27 on Mile Stretch Drive in Holiday. A  20-year-old man from Holiday was operating a Ducati M750 westbound at a high rate of speed. A 20-year-old woman from Lutz was also on the motorcycle.

A Scion sedan, driven by a 70-year-old New Port Richey man, was heading east when it turned into the path of the motorcycle. Both vehicles collided.

The man and woman on the motorcycle died at the accident scene. The driver of the Scion was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Why Are Motorcycle Accidents So Deadly?

Motorcycle accidents are often more deadly than car accidents due to a combination of factors related to the nature of motorcycles. Here’s a look at the main reasons:

  • Lack of protection. Motorcyclists are largely exposed, without the protective shell of a car. This means there are no seat belts to restrain riders during impact and no airbags to absorb crash forces. Riders have direct exposure to the road and other vehicles, leading to severe injuries.
  • Higher vulnerability in collisions. Motorcycles are smaller and lighter than cars, which makes them more susceptible to being thrown off balance. They are prone to being overlooked by other drivers, leading to more side-impact or frontal crashes. Motorcycles are also less able to absorb impact forces, transferring more of the energy to the rider.
  • Ejection risk. Unlike passenger vehicles, motorcycles have no enclosure to protect occupants. Because of this, motorcyclists are often thrown from their bikes due to the impact of a crash, increasing the chances of traumatic injuries upon impact with the ground, objects, or other vehicles.
  • High speeds and maneuverability. Motorcycles often travel at high speeds and are highly maneuverable, which can make them harder to control during sudden stops or swerves. This also increases the risk of losing control, especially on uneven surfaces or during sharp turns.
  • Road hazards. What might be minor for a car, like potholes, wet pavement, or debris, can be catastrophic for a motorcycle. These hazards can cause the rider to lose control, leading to crashes with limited ability to mitigate damage.
  • Limited visibility. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible to other drivers, especially in blind spots. This contributes to a higher likelihood of cars turning or merging into a motorcycle’s path as well as delayed reactions from other drivers.
