6 Injured In Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Cement Truck

You never know what might happen when you’re on the road. All it takes is a second for a driver’s inaction — such as not stopping at a traffic light — to cause a serious crash involving multiple vehicles.

This is what recently happened in Zephyrhills. A cement truck failed to stop at a red light, causing it to rear-end a pickup truck. The impact then caused the truck to hit four more vehicles. Six people were injured in the accident, which occurred on the morning of March 27.

The incident happened on Eiland Boulevard, near Ryals Road. Six vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crash. After the cement truck collided with the pickup truck, the pickup truck burst into flames. This caused critical injuries to the 79-year-old driver, a man from Michigan.

The driver of the cement truck, a 28-year-old man from Spring Hill, was seriously injured. Two other people also suffered serious injuries, including a 31-year-old woman in an SUV. Two more suffered minor injuries, including a 1-year-old boy from Zephyrhills. The roadway was closed for more than four hours as crews cleaned up and investigated.

Cement Truck Accidents

Cement trucks are often found on roadways as they travel to and from construction sites. Concrete trucks weigh around 26,000 pounds. The load it is carrying can weigh an additional 40,000 pounds.

While cement trucks tend to operate on construction sites, close to two-thirds of serious injuries happen while the truck is traveling on roads and highways. Accidents with concrete mixer trucks are usually due to collisions or rollovers. A cement truck that is turning can easily flip over, so an accident can happen before there is time to get out of the way. This is why cement trucks move very slowly while turning.

However, even going around a corner at a speed as slow as 5 miles per hour is enough to cause a rollover. Also, cement trucks are difficult to maneuver because the truck driver cannot see any obstacles that are out of their line of sight. This means it’s possible for a driver to drift out of their lane and cause a head-on collision.

The high center of gravity is another factor in cement truck rollovers. Concrete trucks are top-heavy, which makes it easier for the truck to flip. The constant movement of a rotating drum on a cement truck is another cause for concern, as the movement can also cause a concrete truck to flip.
