Florida Teacher Killed In Car Accident

An unfortunate car accident has led to fatality for a beloved teacher. The Middleburg High School teacher was killed after returning home for Walt Disney World, one of her favorite places.

The fatal crash happened on April 14. The woman was returning home from Walt Disney World with her husband when a car turned in front of them at International Golf Parkway in St. Augustine. The two vehicles collided. The teacher was killed, and her husband was seriously injured and remains in the hospital. Police officers investigated the scene and checked traffic lights to ensure they were working properly.

Students are devastated over the teacher’s death. Students wore Disney apparel in memory of the teacher.

Florida Car Accident Statistics

With a population of more than 19 million, Florida has more than 15 million licensed drivers on its roadways. That’s a lot of cars traveling the various roads and freeways. As such, Florida ranks high for car accidents, with more than 200,000 per year.

Based on 2013 statistics, there were 235,461 accidents, with 2,261 resulting in fatalities. The deadliest county in Florida is Miami-Dade, with 248 fatalities. Broward County had 160 fatalities. There were 151 fatalities in Hillsborough County, 129 in Orange County and 113 in Palm Beach County.

More than half of fatality crashes happen during nighttime hours. Fatal car accidents are more likely to occur on Saturdays, accounting for 19 percent of all car accident fatalities. March tends to have the highest number of fatal accidents.

Fatalities are most common on two-lane roads. In 2010, they accounted for nearly 40 percent of car accident deaths. Males are overwhelmingly more likely to die in a car accident, accounting for 71 percent of deaths vs. 29 percent for females.

Car accidents are caused by various factors. Distracted driving is one of the biggest factors. With more and more drivers using cell phones, they become distracted and cause crashes. Distracted driving may also include eating, talking to passengers, changing radio stations, reading and applying makeup.

Drunk driving and aggressive driving are also major causes of crash. Speed is a major cause of accidents. Inexperienced drivers also cause a high number of car accidents. Some lesser causes of car accidents are improperly maintained roads and defective car parts.
