Man Arrested for DUI in Fatal Florida Bicycle Crash

DUI8

On Thanksgiving, we give thanks for all that we have, despite the ups and downs that this year has given us. However, one family in Florida will instead be planning a funeral after a bicyclist was hit and killed by a drunk driver in Palm Springs.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after rear-ending a bicyclist and fleeing the accident scene while intoxicated. The fatal motor vehicle accident occurred on the evening of November 26 in the 2700 block of Second Avenue North.

A bicycle and pickup truck were headed in the same direction when the pickup truck hit the bicycle from behind. The bicyclist landed on the pickup truck’s hood before landing on the ground. A witness saw the accident and dialed 911. Palm Springs police found the man and arrested him. The bicyclist was killed in the crash. Their identity is unknown.

The driver, from Lake Worth, is facing multiple criminal charges, including DUI, driving without a valid license and hit and run. He was jailed the following day. He is being held on a $300,000 bond.

Causes of Hit and Run

There are many elements in this case. First, a pickup truck hit a bicycle. Bicycle crashes are usually quite serious, especially when motor vehicles are involved. Also, the driver fled the accident scene without stopping to help. This is a serious crime, as is driving while intoxicated. The man’s alcohol consumption impaired his judgment and caused him to keep on driving rather than rendering medical help to the victim.

In fact, driving while intoxicated is one of the main reasons why drivers flee the scene of an accident. Nobody wants to have a DUI on their record, and drivers are even more apt to flee if they already have a DUI conviction on their record.

Another reason why hit and run accidents occur is because the driver is uninsured. While it is required to have a minimum amount of insurance on your vehicle, many people do not because it is expensive and many cannot afford. Therefore, they drive without insurance, but when they are involved in an accident, they will leave to avoid getting caught.

Sometimes drivers don’t mean to leave an accident scene, but they panic. The fight or flight reflex kicks in and in many cases, a person’s first instinct is flight, so they flee the accident scene. They make a bad decision at the time, but many do turn themselves in after the fact.
