Motorcyclist Killed In Crash With SUV

MotorcycleAccident11

When motorcycles collide with larger vehicles like SUVs, the results are often disastrous. Motorcycles are small and the impact of a collision can cause a rider to be ejected. The result could also be significant damage, injuries, and even death.

An SUV and motorcycle were involved in a crash near Clermont. The motorcyclist was killed in the accident. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of January 25 on U.S. Highway 27.

A 51-year-old woman from Clermont was traveling south on U.S. Highway 27 in a Cadillac SRX. She was making a left turn on Green Cove Boulevard when she turned into the direct path of a Triumph motorcycle that was traveling north on the same highway. The two vehicles collided.

The motorcyclist, a 51-year-old man from Clermont, was taken to South Lake Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the SUV was not hospitalized but did suffer minor injuries. The accident caused traffic to back up for miles. The circumstances are still under investigation.

Left Turn Motorcycle Accidents

Left turn accidents are a common cause of motorcycle accidents. They occur when a motorcycle is riding straight through an intersection and at the same time, another vehicle is attempting to turn left. What tends to happen is that the two vehicles collide, causing property damage, injuries, and death.

These accidents happen because motorcycles are small and hard to see. When a driver of a passenger vehicle is turning left, they often don’t notice that the motorcycle is there. That’s because motorists are not instinctively looking for these smaller vehicles.

Left turn motorcycle accidents are a serious issue. In fact, statistics show that more than 40% of fatal motorcycle crashes happen in this manner.

When these crashes occur, the driver who is attempting to turn is the one who is at fault. That’s because, generally speaking, the motorist going straight has the right of way. So when the motorist tries to make a turn in front of the motorcycle, they do not have the right of way. Sixty percent of multi-vehicle accidents occur because a driver violates the motorcyclist’s right of way.

There are three main ways in which left turn violations occur:

  • Drivers pull out of their driveways without looking for pedestrians or motorcycles.
  • Motorcyclists ride in the blind spots of other vehicles, causing visibility issues.
  • A driver acts recklessly by turning in front of a motorcycle.

These accidents can occur in both urban and rural areas. They are most common at four-way intersections although they can occur at non-intersections as well.
