Zephyrhills Woman Killed In Crash

TruckFlip

It’s important to be cautious while behind the wheel. Before making a turn, make sure it is clear in all directions. Otherwise, you could collide with a vehicle and cause a fatal crash.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Hillsborough. A woman was killed in a crash at an intersection. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of February 5 at the intersection of US-301 and Ranch Road.

An 18-year-old woman from Riverview was heading west on Ranch Road. When she turned left on US-301, she drove into the path of a pickup truck traveling north. Both vehicles collided, causing the pickup truck to overturn and hit a fence.

A passenger in the pickup truck, a 42-year-old Zephyrhills woman, was not wearing a seatbelt. She was ejected from the vehicle and died. The driver of the pickup truck suffered serious injuries.

The teen’s vehicle came to a stop in the northbound lane of US-301. Both the teen and her passenger, an 18-year-old man from Riverview, suffered minor injuries.

Dangers of Left Turns

It’s important to be alert when making a left turn. Studies show that left-turning vehicles are the most likely to cause a fatal intersection crash.

Here are several reasons why left turns are so dangerous:

  • Obstructed view while turning
  • Driving into blind spots
  • Miscalculating the distance across the intersection
  • Misjudgment of the other driver’s speed
  • Failure to signal
  • Failure to yield the right of way to the other driver

Keep in mind that drivers who are turning left do not have the right of way. This means they must wait for oncoming traffic to pass before turning. When an accident occurs, the driver making the left turn is presumed to be negligent. This means they will be liable for all damages unless they can prove otherwise. Some defenses they may be able to use include:

  • The other driver drove through a red light.
  • The other driver was driving drunk, using their cell phone, or engaging in some other illegal action.
  • An unexpected event required the turning driver to stop in the middle of the turn, causing the crash.

Your lawyer can help you find the appropriate evidence to prove your case. Traffic or other surveillance cameras can show how the accident happened. Witnesses can also explain what they saw, which can work in your favor. If you saw the driver on the phone, then police may be able to retrieve phone records to prove this.
