How To Avoid A DUI During The Holidays

DUI_Precaution

Drunk driving is a problem every day of the year, but DUIs tend to increase over the holidays. People celebrate Christmas and New Year’s with alcohol, and then try to drive home. While some make it home OK, others cause serious accidents or get pulled over by police for reckless driving.

Drunk driving is expected to be on the rise this year during the holidays, with Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve on Fridays, and Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both falling on Saturdays. Police units will be out in full force to look for drunk drivers. Don’t get caught during the holidays. Here are some ways to avoid getting DUI over the next few weeks as we transition from 2022 to 2023.

Stay Sober

The best way to avoid a DUI is to not drink any alcohol. While it’s tempting to have a glass of wine or a  beer with friends and family, especially if everyone else is drinking, you don’t need alcohol to have a good time. You can drink other beverages and still enjoy yourself. You can serve as a designated driver for others, plus you won’t have to deal with a hangover the next morning.

Call Uber or Lyft

Rideshare is popular for a reason: they allow someone else to drive. Take an Uber or Lyft to the party. That way, you won’t have your car, so you won’t be able to drive home drunk. Rideshare can be pricey, especially late at night, but it’s better than putting someone else’s life at risk.

Stay at a Local Hotel

If there’s a hotel within walking distance, you can stay there after the party. That way, you can drink as much as you want without inconveniencing anyone else.

Host Your Own Party

If you want to drink, host your own party. That way, you don’t have to go anywhere afterward. You can just hop into bed and call it a night. Be a good host by allowing others to stay the night if they end up drinking too much.

Know Your Limits

If you’ve drank alcohol before, you should have a good idea of your limits. What happens after you have one drink? Two drinks? Five? If you do drink, try to have just one drink or at least stay below your limit.

Drink on a Full Stomach

Don’t drink alcohol on an empty stomach—the drink will hit you harder and make you feel worse. If you do drink, have a drink with dinner or another meal. You’ll be able to pace yourself better and not drink as much.

Seek Help for Your DUI Case

DUI cases are punished harshly in Florida. While alcohol consumption tends to rise around the holidays, it’s best to avoid drinking and driving.
