2 Killed In 2-Vehicle Crash Near DeLand

CarFire2

An early morning car accident has killed two people and injured four others. The fatal crash occurred on June 4 at State Road 472 and County Road 4101 in DeLand.

A 44-year-old man from DeBary was driving a Ford pickup on eastbound State Route 472 when he rear-ended a Toyota RAV. The impact caused the RAV4 to overturn. The Ford went off the road and hit a tree. It then caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.

The pickup truck driver and a passenger in the RAV4, a 13-year-old Casselberry girl, died at the accident scene. The girl was not wearing a seat belt. Four others in the RAV4 suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters from DeLand and Volusia County responded. State Route 472 was closed around the accident.

Seat Belt Safety

Wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest things you can do to stay safe while riding in a vehicle. However, many people still refuse to do so. Had the 13-year-old girl in this case been wearing one, there is a possibility that she could still be alive. It is estimated that in 2017, seat belts saved the lives of nearly 15,000 people. In 2019, 47% of those killed in car accidents were not wearing a seat belt.

Wearing seat belts saves lives because they keep you inside a vehicle. This is safer than being ejected from a vehicle, which almost always ends in fatality. Many drivers and passengers rely on air bags, but those are not enough to keep you safe. In fact, if you are not buckled up when an air bag deploys, it could kill you. You could hit something inside the vehicle, such as the interior or other passengers.

However, it is also not enough to have a seat belt around you. If it is not properly worn, it could kill you. The lap belt and shoulder belt are to go over the pelvis and rib cage. The lap belt goes across your hips. The shoulder belt should be placed across the middle of your chest, away from your neck. It should never go under an arm or behind your back.

Even pregnant women should wear seat belts. The lap belt should go under your belly, across your hips. It should never be placed on top of your belly. The air bags should also stay on.

Whether you’re driving across the country or just driving a few blocks to the store, you need to wear a seat belt at all times. Even if you’re an experienced driver, you can never predict the actions of other drivers. You could still be involved in a crash, and a seat belt is your best defense.
