2 Teens Injured In High-Speed Crash
Sports cars are made to go fast. Still, some drivers take these machines to their limits, pushing their vehicle to triple-digit speeds, causing loss of control. In many cases, drivers collide with buildings, guardrails, and other solid, sturdy objects, causing serious damage, catastrophic injuries, and even death.
Two teens were recently injured when a speeding Corvette they were riding in collided with a guardrail. The crash was so intense that the Corvette broke apart due to the impact. The crash happened on April 19 on I-75 South in Pasco County.
An 18-year-old man from Spring Hill was driving the Corvette. In the passenger seat was an 18-year-old woman, also from Spring Hill. The vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and hit a guardrail. The Corvette then slid across three lanes and landed on the west shoulder of the road.
The crash destroyed the Corvette. The car’s engine became tangled in the guardrail in the median. Body panels, tires, and other parts were strewn about the roadway. Both occupants were wearing a seat belt, but still suffered serious injuries. They were airlifted to a local hospital.
All lanes of I-75 South were closed for a while as crews cleared the debris from the accident, but later reopened.
Dangers of Speeding
Speed limits are in place for a reason. They help keep everyone on the roadway safe, as increased speeds mean a higher risk of accidents and catastrophic injuries. Still, many drivers disregard the speed limit. They think it’s fun to go fast. Maybe they’re running late for work. Maybe they’re distracted or intoxicated and unaware of the speed limit or how fast they are going.
Some drivers are just aggressive. Then there are those who simply have no regard for the law and want to drive however they want. While speeding does provide a temporary high for some drivers, it’s an unsafe activity.
It’s important to pay attention to your speed while on the roadway. Speeding comes with many dangers as well as legal consequences. It can cause the following:
- Loss of control
- Increased risk of a rollover accident
- Hydroplaning and spinouts, especially on wet or icy roads
- Increased distance needed to stop the vehicle
- More severe injuries if a crash does occur
- Speeding tickets, which can lead to fines, increased insurance rates, and points on your driver’s license
