Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash In Pasco County

MotorcycleAccident12

Speed kills, and this is especially true for motorcyclists. Riders often go too fast, making them unable to stop in time to avoid a crash.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Pasco County. A motorcycle rider was killed after colliding with a pickup truck hauling a trailer. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight on March 7.

A 23-year-old man from Tampa was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle on I-75. It was traveling south near milepost 274 at a high rate of speed when it overtook and collided with a trailer towed by a Ford F-250 pickup truck. The trailer was full of vehicle parts.

Upon impact, the motorcyclist was ejected into the open trailer. Debris from the crash was then spread across all southbound lanes of I-75. The debris caused a secondary crash. In total, five vehicles were involved.

The motorcycle rider was killed in the crash. Nobody else was injured. The southbound lanes of I-75 were closed for more than three hours.

Motorcycles and Speed

Motorcycles seem to always be going faster than passenger vehicles. Is this really the case? It could be, but it shouldn’t be. Motorcycle riders have to follow the same laws as other motorists. So if the speed limit is 55 miles per hour, that applies to everyone on the roadway.

Even if a motorcyclist is following the traffic laws, it is often perceived that they are going much faster. That’s mainly because they are accelerating at faster rates. While there are no laws regarding acceleration rates, when you are accelerating much more quickly than those around you, that can be unsafe. It can also draw attention to the police.

Also, road hazards can be dangerous to motorcycles. Sometimes speeding up makes potholes and other road issues more bearable, so that may be why you see motorcycle riders suddenly speed up at various points on the road.

Another thing to consider is that motorcycles are much smaller than passenger vehicles. These vehicles pose a huge threat to bike riders. That’s because cars and trucks have large blind spots and drivers aren’t always checking for motorcycles before changing lanes. Because of this, motorcycle riders must proactively avoid collisions with cars. Sometimes they may need to accelerate in order to get out of the blind spots and become more visible.

In any case, as a motorcycle rider, keep in mind that the faster you go, the more room you need to stop. A typical bike with an expert rider can stop in 30-35 feet while traveling at 30 miles per hour. However, at 60 miles per hour, the distance quadruples to 120-140 feet.
