Common Issues In Subsequent Marriages

Marriage_Multi

When you get married the first time around, you have a 50/50 chance of making it. For second marriages, the divorce rate is 67%. For third marriages, that rate increases to 73%.

If you’re hoping to beat the odds, you need more than a little luck on your side. You need a little knowledge as well. You need to be aware of the dangers involved and how you can turn these issues into opportunities. Here are some issues that are common in subsequent marriages.

Blended Families

This is one of the biggest issues among those who remarry after divorce. Many people have children, so not only are you dealing with your own kids, but you might be trying to have a relationship with someone who also has children. Adapting to new people can be a challenge. You have to tread lightly and be careful not to come on too strong. You don’t want to be the disciplinarian and you don’t want to play favorites. Being a stepparent is a hard role, and you’ll need to work with your spouse to make things work.

Trauma From Past Relationships

After a divorce, you want to make sure you don’t choose the same type of partner. For example, if your spouse cheated on you, you want to make sure your next partner is faithful. However, as a result, you may have trust issues. You may want to know where your partner is at all times. Instead of being controlling, focus more on communication. Give your partner an opportunity for you to trust them. Over time, your wounds from past trauma will heal.

You Get Into a Rebound Relationship

It’s hard to be alone after being married for so long, but after a divorce, you need to take things slow and find out what you want in a partner. Don’t rush into a committed partnership so quickly, as it will likely fail and leave you down in the dumps. Expand your dating pool and give relationships time to evolve.

You’re Holding Onto Memories

Even after a divorce, you may still think of the fond memories you made while married. You and your ex likely had some good times together. It’s OK to think about these memories from time to time, but not to the point where you cannot move on because you’re hoping for a reconciliation. Think about the good times and find someone who makes you feel the same way. Make new memories with a new partner.

Seek Help for Your Divorce Case

Many people decide to get married again after a divorce, but not all are up to the task. There are many dangers involved in getting married for the second or third time around.
