How to Make Your Divorce Quicker, Easier and Cheaper

If you have never been through a divorce, you might not know exactly what to expect. You may imagine yelling and screaming and tears in court as you and your spouse fight over assets and children.

While this may be what you have seen on TV, this isn’t how most divorce cases end up. A lot of times, couples go through mediation or some other process in order to split amicably. After all, court is expensive and the longer a divorce drags on, the more a person will pay.

Unless you’re a celebrity or multi-millionaire, you likely don’t have a ton of money to spend on a divorce. You probably just want to get it over with as quickly, easily and cheaply as possible. And you can, if you follow these tips.

Eliminate the Drama

Divorces are rarely happy affairs. A divorce incorporates finances, law and emotions, so there’s bound to be some drama involved. After all, if you and your spouse were happy, you would still be married.

However, when you’re so consumed by drama, you’re bound to make terrible decisions. Therefore, you need to get rid of the drama so you can think with a clear head. Divorce are legal situations that require clarity and stability. So quit with the anger and find a way to move forward.

Prepare Your Finances

Before you even talk to a lawyer, you should have your financial statements in order. Being prepared will streamline the divorce process, saving you time and money.

The first thing you should do is gather all your financial documents from the past year. This includes pay stubs, bank statements, credit card statements, mortgage bills and any other documents that show assets and debts. You’ll need to disclose all of this in your divorce, so be sure to include everything.

Try Mediation

Before you pay for a lawyer, you may want to try mediation first. Mediation uses a neutral third party to help you and your spouse make decisions about important elements, such as asset division, child custody and alimony. The mediator cannot help you make decisions, but they can guide you through the process. The goal is to allow you and your spouse to compromise and make decisions on your terms, rather than having a judge make decisions that neither of you may agree with.

However, if you and your spouse are unwilling to compromise, then you may have to move on to litigation. It’s recommended that you hire a lawyer to help you should you proceed to this step.
