Motorcyclist Dies After Hitting Parked Car
Motorcycle accidents can be dangerous. Even doing something like hitting a parked car can be fatal for a rider.
Sadly, this recently happened in Pasco County. A man was killed after losing control of his motorcycle in Dade City. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of March 16.
A 55-year-old Tampa man was riding a Yamaha motorcycle. He was heading south on Evergreen Court when he lost control of his bike north of Cummer Road. The motorcycle collided with a parked Toyota RAV4 in the Cypress Manor residential community parking area. There was no one inside the RAV4 at the time of the accident.
The man was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. He died shortly after arrival.
Why Are Motorcycle Accidents So Severe?
Car accidents are often serious in nature. Motorcycle crashes can be catastrophic or even deadly due to the following factors:
- Lack of protection. Motorcycles offer minimal protection to riders compared to enclosed vehicles like cars. In a collision, riders are directly exposed to the impact forces and are more likely to be thrown from their bikes.
- Size and visibility. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than cars, making them more susceptible to being overlooked by other drivers, particularly in blind spots or during lane changes.
- Balance and stability. Motorcycles require a higher degree of balance and skill to operate compared to cars. Loss of control due to factors like road conditions, mechanical failure, or rider error can lead to more severe accidents.
- High speeds. Motorcycles are capable of high speeds and acceleration, which can increase the severity of accidents when they occur.
- Road hazards. Road hazards pose greater risks to motorcycles than to cars due to their smaller size and less stable design. Riders need to be aware of potholes, debris, uneven surfaces, water on the road, oil slicks, and other dangers on the road.
- Rider vulnerability. Motorcyclists are more exposed to external elements like weather conditions, wind, and temperature changes, which can affect their ability to control the bike and react to hazards.
- Limited protection gear. Riders can wear protective gear such as helmets, jackets, and gloves. However, this gear may not offer the same level of protection as the safety features built into cars, such as airbags and crumple zones.
- Rider behavior. Some motorcycle accidents are caused by reckless or inexperienced riders who may engage in high-risk behaviors such as speeding, lane splitting, or riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
