Pedestrian Killed In Hit And Run Crash

Jogger2

There are lots of pedestrians in Miami, as there are many attractions in the area. Tourists and residents alike flock to the popular Florida city. And while walking from place to place can be healthier and more convenient at times, it can also be dangerous.

A pedestrian crash recently led to fatality. The fatal accident happened on the morning of October 29 at the intersection of SW 152nd Street and SW 128th Avenue.

The pedestrian, a 17-year-old boy, was out jogging when he was hit by a white Volkswagen Passat. The driver fled the accident scene. The teen died from his injuries before emergency crews could arrive.

Police looked for the driver, using the pedestrian’s red shoes as evidence. They received a tip where the vehicle might be located. Investigators found the vehicle under a tarp at the address.

Police located the driver, a 23-year-old woman. She admitted to the hit and run accident and was taken to TGK Correctional Center. The woman had driven onto the sidewalk and hit the teen, so he wasn’t even in the road at the time. The woman drove off without calling 911. She has been charged with leaving the accident scene and causing a death.

Many people who live in the area claim that the intersection is dangerous. There are fast food restaurants and gas stations in the area, so it can be busy. Plus, many of the drivers speed, which can lead to serious accidents.

Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

One of the main causes of pedestrian crashes is speed. Going too fast makes it difficult for drivers to stop and avoid hazards, since a higher speed requires a lengthier stopping distance. Plus, it can cause a vehicle to lose control. This is especially true on poorly maintained roads as well as in extreme weather conditions, such as rain, snow, and ice.

Here are some other causes of pedestrian accidents:

  • Using a smartphone while driving is very dangerous, especially when texting. Texting causes a person to take their eyes off the road and their hands off the wheel, which can lead to accidents.
  • Distracted driving. While texting is one of the top distractions a driver can face, they can also be distracted by passengers and pets. Many drivers also try to multitask by reading and grooming while driving. These distractions can cause drivers to lose focus and crash.
  • Driving while intoxicated. Drinking and driving is illegal and highly dangerous. It reduces judgment and slows down a driver’s reaction time, making accidents more likely.
