Semi Truck Driver Killed In Florida Crash

Truck11

Chain-reaction crashes involve multiple vehicles, which means that the injuries can be severe and even fatal. Sadly, this was recently the case in Florida, when a tractor-trailer hauling mail was involved in such an accident, killing the driver.

The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of August 24 on I-75, near Milepost 316, in Sumter County. A tractor trailer was hauling USPS mail when it failed to slow down for traffic. As a result, it collided with a Chevy Trailblazer.

The Trailblazer then collided into a Freightliner tractor trailer. The tractor trailer hauling mail then collided with a Peterbilt tractor trailer hauling metal pipes.

The driver of the tractor trailer hauling mail died at the accident scene. Nobody else was injured. Some of the mail caught fire due to the impact. Parts of I-75 were shut down after the accident.

Causes of Semi Truck Accidents

Semi truck crashes may be caused by various factors, including the following:

  • Going too fast is dangerous for semi trucks, as their size can cause catastrophic accidents. Plus, drivers are more likely to lose control.
  • Distracted driving. Truck drivers need to keep their eyes on the road at all times. Looking away even just for a few seconds to send texts, read books, eat, or change the radio station can lead to a serious accident.
  • There are hours of service laws in place to prevent drivers from being on the road while overtired, but these laws are not always followed. Drivers are limited to 11 hours of driving per day, but many are still fatigued. They may fall asleep while driving, causing head-on crashes or causing the truck to go off the road.
  • Driving under the influence. Drinking and driving is never legal, but some truck drivers do it anyway. This is a serious situation that can negatively impact a driver’s judgment, making accidents more likely to occur.
  • Rain, snow, and ice can cause slippery roads, reducing visibility and making it harder for truck drivers to stay in control.
  • Sometimes trucking companies overdo it when it comes to hauling cargo. They may overload trucks in order to save time, but this can have serious consequences. The truck can suffer a tire blowout or the truck can tip over. Either can cause a dangerous situation on the roadways.
  • Poor maintenance. Semi trucks are driven a lot and need to be maintained frequently. If not, they can suffer tire blowouts, brake failure, and other serious issues, all which can cause a wreck.
