Woman Killed In Truck Accident

TruckAcc7

Florida sees its share of semi trucks. These large vehicles can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and be deadly in a crash.

Sadly, this was recently the case for an elderly woman who was killed in a car-truck crash in Zephyrhills. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of February 16 on US-301.

An 85-year-old woman from Wisconsin was at the intersection of US-301 and Wire Road. She was driving a Kia Soul northbound when she attempted a U-turn. Her vehicle entered the path of a tractor-trailer that was heading south. The truck was driven by a 37-year-old woman from Georgia.

The two vehicles collided. The woman driving the Kia was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The woman driving the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Dangers of Semi Trucks

A tractor-trailer can cause a lot of damage to smaller vehicles and other objects due to its size, weight, and speed. Here are some considerations.

  • Severe injuries and death. Semi trucks are significantly larger and heavier than passenger vehicles, which means that collisions with them can result in catastrophic or even fatal injuries for occupants of smaller vehicles, as well as pedestrians and cyclists.
  • High impact force. The sheer force generated by a semi truck colliding with another vehicle or object can be immense due to the truck’s momentum and weight. This force can cause devastating damage to both property and humans.
  • Blind spots. Semi trucks have large blind spots, especially on the sides and rear of the vehicle. If a driver is in one of these blind spots, the truck driver may not see them, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Rollover risk. Semi-trucks have a higher center of gravity compared to smaller vehicles, making them more prone to rolling over in certain types of accidents. A rollover can crush nearby vehicles or pedestrians.
  • Cargo hazards. If a semi truck is transporting hazardous materials, such as chemicals or flammable liquids, a collision can lead to spills or explosions, causing additional dangers to people and the environment.
  • Road blockages. Due to their size, semi-trucks can block multiple lanes of traffic in the event of a collision, leading to traffic congestion and delays, as well as making it difficult for emergency responders to reach the scene.
  • Psychological impact. Being involved in a truck accident or even just witnessing one can have long-lasting psychological effects, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
