Florida Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycles can be fun to ride, especially now, in the warm summer weather. While motorcycles offer a lot of fresh air and freedom, they are also dangerous. They don’t have the protection that cars do, so in the event of a motorcycle accident, you could end up seriously injured or even killed. Unfortunately, that’s a reality that motorcyclists face every day.

A Florida man was killed while riding a motorcycle in the Golden Gate Estate area of Naples.  The fatal accident occurred on the evening of July 10 on Golden Gate Boulevard East.

The crash happened when the motorcyclist, a 25-year-old man from Naples, rear-ended a roadway maintenance vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the inside lane of Golden Gate Boulevard East. It had a flashing directional arrow on and was performing roadway measurements when the motorcycle hit it. A 50-year-old man from Cape Coral was driving the maintenance vehicle at the time of the crash. He was not injured.

The motorcyclist, however, died from his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Florida Helmet Laws

Many motorcyclists find helmets uncool or restricting, so while traveling Florida’s roadways, you may see a lot of motorcycle riders without one. In the past, all motorcyclists in Florida were required to wear helmets, but this law was repealed in the year 2000.

Now, as long as motorcyclists meet certain requirements, they legally do not have to wear a helmet. Under Florida law, those age 21 or older may operate or ride a motorcycle without wearing a helmet as long as they are covered by an insurance policy that provides a minimum of $10,000 in medical benefits in the event of an accident. So while the motorcyclist in this story was legally within his rights to not wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, wearing one may have saved his life.

Those under the age of 21 must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, regardless of the amount of insurance they have. Once they reach 21 years old, they can decide whether or not they want to continue wearing a helmet.

However, you should take your safety into consideration. Looking uncool by wearing a helmet is better than being dead. Helmets are known to prevent head injuries and fatalities. They save more than 1,000 lives every year. Ultimately, though, in the state of Florida, wearing a helmet is your choice. However, keep in mind that it could mean the difference between life and death.
