Mail Truck Driver Seriously Injured in Florida Crash

Truck accidents can result in serious injuries to all those involved. They can also be messy situations, especially when the cargo from these trucks ends up on the roadways.

A mail truck was recently involved in a crash on Interstate 75, near Big Bend Road in Riverview. The accident happened on southbound Interstate 75 on the morning of October 28. A big rig hauling produce and water had stopped on the side of the road due to two flat tires. That was when he mail truck swerved onto the shoulder and rear-ended the truck.

The crash left a huge mess on the interstate. A ton of mail—including papers and cardboard boxes—was strewn all over the road for a few hundred feet. Numerous workers cleared the debris off the busy interstate using brooms and blowers. Crews also tended to the damaged trucks.

The mess left just one lane of Interstate 75 open. All lanes were cleared after almost four hours. Despite the magnitude of the mess, local mail delivery was not expected to be impacted. That’s because the truck was carrying advertisements to be delivered in the mail. No packages or first-class mail was involved.

The mail truck driver was identified as a 58-year-old man from North Carolina. He suffered serious injuries in the crash. He is expected to face criminal charges for his role in the accident.

Causes of Truck Accidents

It is unknown what caused the mail truck to suddenly swerve into the other truck and cause a serious crash. Truck drivers often face a lot of pressures and as a result, they tend to make huge driving errors.

Many truck drivers have deadlines to meet and sometimes work long hours. This can cause them to drive while fatigued or even fall asleep at the wheel. Distracted driving is also an issue. If a driver is not paying attention to the road, they may fail to see vehicles in front of them until it is too late. They may then cause a rear-end crash.

Truck drivers often use stimulants to stay awake and drive for longer. These stimulants may keep a driver awake for some time, but then the driver can feel their body crash after time. This can cause them to slow down and feel drowsy, which can also lead to a serious accident.

Mechanical issues can also cause crashes. If trucks and trailers are not properly maintained, equipment failure can occur. These issues can include tire blowouts, lights that fail to work and brake failure. If cargo is not loaded properly, it can cause the truck to be out of balance and possibly roll over.
