Man Killed After Falling Off Motorcycle In Florida Crash

MotorcycleAccident4

Riding a motorcycle can be exhilarating while enjoying the gorgeous Florida weather. However, motorcycles can be delicate and just one wrong move can lead to total chaos and even fatality.

Sadly, that was recently the case for a Punta Gorda man who fell off his motorcycle and was run over multiple times, leading to his death. The fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the evening of October 20 on Interstate 75.

The 57-year-old man was riding on northbound Interstate 75, near the U.S. 17 exit. As he changed, he lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to overturn. The man was ejected and he landed in the center lane of the interstate.

The man was hit by four vehicles. The first one, a pickup truck, fled the accident scene. A vehicle behind the pickup truck also hit the man but stopped and remained at the scene. A third vehicle tried to stop but was rear-ended by a fourth vehicle. Both vehicles also hit the motorcyclist, who died at the crash site. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the case and still looking for the driver of the pickup truck.

What Causes Motorcycles to Lose Control?

Motorcycles have just two wheels and are harder to control than other motor vehicles. There are several factors that can cause motorcycles to lose control:

  • Going too fast is dangerous, as it can make it harder for a motorcyclist to prevent a collision. There is less time to slow down for hazards in the road. It also makes it harder to navigate curves in the road.
  • Lack of experience. Properly riding a motorcycle takes immense skill and balance. It’s not like driving a car, in which balance is not critical. Plus, in a motorcycle, you need to know when to brake. Braking should never be done while turning, as it can throw off the rider’s balance and cause them to be ejected.
  • Weather conditions. Rain, snow, and hail can make it difficult for a rider to stay in control. So can heavy wind, since motorcycles are not as heavy as passenger vehicles. It’s best to avoid driving in these conditions, if possible.
  • Road conditions. Puddles, potholes, and uneven roads can cause a motorcycle rider to lose control. So can debris on the road, such as gravel, leaves, oil slicks, and dead animals.
