Man Killed In Hillsborough County Motorcycle Crash
When riding a motorcycle, an accident can happen in an instant. Sometimes other motorists are at fault. In many cases, though, the rider is to blame.
A man from Wesley Chapel was recently killed in a motorcycle crash after losing control on a slippery road. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of August 11 on US-301 in Hillsborough County.
The 24-year-old man was riding a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle on US-301, north of Dead River Road, when he lost control. He was attempting to pass other vehicles on a wet road when the motorcycle overturned. The Kawasaki slid off the road and collided with a sign on the side of the road.
The rider died at the accident scene. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Dangers of Riding a Motorcycle on Wet Roads
Riding a motorcycle on wet roads can be dangerous due to these factors:
- Reduced traction. Wet roads decrease the grip between the motorcycle tires and the road surface, increasing the likelihood of skidding or sliding.
- Puddles may conceal potholes or debris, and riding through them can lead to a loss of control.
- Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tires and the road, causing a loss of traction.
- Slippery road conditions. Painted road markings, metal surfaces, and leaves become extremely slippery when wet. These surfaces can easily cause a motorcycle to lose traction.
- Decreased visibility. Rain can obscure a rider’s vision, making it harder to see the road, obstacles, or other vehicles.
- Cold and wet conditions. Rain usually comes with cooler temperatures, which can cause tires to lose their optimal operating temperature, reducing grip. Additionally, wet riding gear can be uncomfortable and distracting.
- Reduced motorcycle stability. Motorcycles are inherently less stable than cars due to having only two wheels. Wet conditions can make this instability worse, making it easier to lose control.
Because of these risks, motorcycle riders should take the appropriate steps to stay safe on wet roads. Here are some ideas:
- Reduce speed. Slow down and look for puddles on the road that can cause loss of control.
- Avoid sudden maneuvers. Moving too quickly on a wet road can cause you to skid.
- Maintain a greater following distance. Don’t get too close to vehicles in front of you. It takes longer to slow down on wet roads, so stay back.
- Ensure tires are in good condition. Worn-out or improperly inflated tires will perform poorly in wet conditions, which can increase the risk of accidents.
