Staying Safe on Florida Roads

felony-dui

Gas prices are dropping in the state. While this is good news for travelers, it also means many more cars will be out and about, with record levels of travel expected. With the influx of vehicles, car crashes are more common. With more people out partying and consuming alcohol and drugs, DUI offenses will likely be on the rise throughout the state.

Therefore, the Florida Highway Patrol and AAA are recommending that drivers take precautions in order to keep themselves and others safe. Of course, all drivers and passengers should buckle up. Not only is wearing a seatbelt safe, but it’s also the law.

Intoxication is a huge issue. People know that they shouldn’t drive while drunk, but many feel overconfident in their abilities and drive anyway, causing serious accidents. Instead of driving, a person should find an alternative route home. They can ask a friend or family member to drive them home or use a taxi or ride service.

Those who notice an impaired driver on the road can take action to keep others safe. They can call local law enforcement or dial *FHP (*347). This action could save their own life or the lives of others.

People should also be aware that having an open container of alcohol in a car is against the law in Florida. It is illegal whether the car is in motion or stopped.

Here are a couple other things to keep in mind, since alcohol use is one of the biggest causes of car crashes. The legal drinking age in Florida is 21, which means that anyone younger than 21 and in possession of alcohol can be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor. A person who buys alcohol or sells alcohol to someone under the age of 21 can also be charged with a misdemeanor. A person who is drinking and driving and causes serious injury or death can face felony charges.

The best ways to sober up after drinking too much? Time and rest. Coffee and cold showers can help a person look more alert, but they do little to actually break down alcohol and make a person less intoxicated. Also, the definition of a drink differs based on the type of alcohol consumed. For example, 1.5 ounces of liquor can be found in a 12-ounce can of beer,  a 12-ounce wine cooler or a 5-ounce glass of wine.
