What is Causing Gray Divorces?

In the past, a couple who had been married for 20 or more years was pretty much set for life. They didn’t have to worry about divorce. After all, they had made it for two decades, so why would they suddenly decide to divorce? What could cause them to fall out of love with each other and decide to split up?

Today, gray divorces are on the rise. In fact, all other age groups have seen declines in divorce rates except in those over the age of 50. Why are older people sacrificing their retirements to end their marriages?

While those who marry young have their challenges, so do those who have been together for many years. Some couples stay together solely for the children. Others are tired of living a lie and decide to get out. It often takes a person many years to build up the courage to end the marriage and seek a divorce.

What are the main causes of gray divorce? Read on to learn more about this growing trend.

Reasons for Divorce After 50

  • Growing apart. Being together forever can seem like an eternity to some couples. Some lose the spark that they had when they first met. While that’s normal, some couples feel as though they no longer have anything in common with each other, especially if the kids have grown up and the husband and wife are now empty nesters.
  • Once a person hits middle age, they may feel as though they need to regain their youth. This is especially true for men, who may start to feel attracted to younger women. Many Baby Boomers are looking out for their own needs, so if their spouses aren’t giving them what they need, they’ll look elsewhere.
  • Increased life expectancy. Greater access to health care means that people are living longer than ever. It is now not uncommon for people to live well into their 80s and 90s. At age 50, a person may live 30 or 40 more years. They may not want to spend those years with someone who makes them unhappy.
  • Self-improvement. As people retire, they may have time to make some changes to their life. Maybe they want to exercise more, lose weight or change their wardrobe. These changes can make them more attractive. As a result, they may gain the admiration of others. This can make them feel as though they are ignored by their spouse, since they are getting attention elsewhere.
  • Sometimes people develop addictions with age. A person who is bored or unhappy may turn to alcohol, drugs, gambling or pornography. A person may ignore their spouse in order to engage in these habits. Addictions can also put financial strains on a marriage.
