Boy Killed in Semi Truck Crash on Interstate 10

When it comes to getting hit by a vehicle, getting in a semi truck crash is probably the deadliest type of automobile accident. Semi trucks weigh as much as 20 times more than your average passenger car. That means that a collision between a car and semi truck can be deadly.

Sadly, this was the case for a Florida boy. The 10-year-old was killed when a semi truck collided in an SUV he was riding in.

The fatal accident occurred on the evening of January 7 in Jacksonville, on Interstate 10 at Mile Marker 346. A semi truck was heading east on Interstate 10 when, for unknown reasons, it went onto the grass median. It then overturned into the westbound lanes, hitting a Honda SUV.

A 10-year-old boy was a passenger inside the Honda. He died at the accident scene. The driver, a 45-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries. The driver of the semi truck was not injured.

What Causes Truck Accidents?

Semi truck crashes can happen for a variety of reasons. One common issue is substance abuse. Truck drivers are often forced to stay awake and drive for long periods of time. Even though there are hours of service laws in place, these regulations are often ignored. Therefore, in order to meet strict deadlines, drivers must get to their destination, no matter the cost. This may mean using drugs or alcohol in an attempt to stay awake.

However, these substances often have the opposite effect. While the driver may stay awake for some period of time, drugs and alcohol can cause a person to quickly crash, causing sudden fatigue. The judgment of these drivers is severely affected. They lose coordination and cannot respond quickly. In some cases, they even fall asleep behind the wheel, causing serious crashes.

Lack of proper training can also be an issue. Driving a large truck is no easy feat. These trucks can be 50 feet or longer. Some have trailers attached, making them even longer. The number of blind spots means that even trying to change lanes can be a challenge. These trucks also cannot stop as quickly and if they turn a corner too sharply, they can overturn. It takes a great deal of training in order to maneuver these trucks properly, and if someone is not trained, they can cause a serious accident.

Oftentimes, these trucks are not maintained properly. The brakes are bad. The tires are in need of replacement. Trucking company owners, however, often forego maintenance because this wastes time and money—time and money they could be using to make deliveries. The results, however, can be disastrous.
