Motorcycle-Tow Truck Accident Leads To Fatality

Passing another vehicle on the road can sometimes be a dangerous maneuver, especially if you’re riding a motorcycle. Motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles and are therefore harder to see. When a motorcycle and tow truck try to change lanes at the same time, accidents are bound to occur.

Such a situation in Florida led to a fatality. A recent crash in St. Petersburg on 34th Street South involved a tow truck and motorcycle. Both vehicles were traveling south when the motorcycle attempted to pass the tow truck at the same time the tow truck was changing lanes to make a right turn.

The 55-year-old motorcyclist ended up hitting the tow truck’s passenger mirror and he was thrown from his bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 32-year-old tow truck driver stayed at the crash scene. It is unknown if he suffered any injuries. The accident is still under investigation.

Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Riding a motorcycle can be fun if you know how to stay safe. It’s important for motorcycle riders to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Sometimes they are unseen by other motorcyclists, so it’s often necessary to predict the moves of other motorists.

Motorcyclists tend to engage in dangerous maneuvers. Speeding, turning too tight around corners and passing unsafely can lead to serious accidents. These crashes can lead to serious injuries and even death.

Speaking of speed, motorcycles have a lot of power and it’s easy to abuse it. Going fast may be fun, but if a car ever suddenly stops in front of you, it will be hard to stop in time. This can lead to skids and rear-end accidents.

You can avoid these situations by staying at or under the speed limit, especially in inclement weather. Rain, snow and ice can cause slippery road conditions. Because motorcycles have just two wheels, they are harder to control. Even debris and oil slicks on the road can cause a motorcycle to spin out and cause a serious crash.

Keep in mind, though, that not all motorcycle-related crashes are caused by the motorcyclist. Many accidents are caused by other motorists. Motorcycles are small and sometimes are not seen by drivers of passenger cars and trucks. Motorcycles can easily fit into a blind spot, which means motorcyclists must always be aware of the possibility of a side-swipe collision.

Another common crash occurs when cars turn in front of motorcycles. This happens because motorists do not expect to see motorcycles in their line of visions.
