Motorcyclist Killed In Florida Car Crash

Motorc2

Motorcycles can be a lot of fun, but safety isn’t their strong point. Even the safest motorcycle rider can get hit by a distracted or oblivious driver, resulting in a dangerous or even fatal accident.

Sadly, this was the case for a Florida man who was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle in Orange County. The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of February 23 at Dean Road and Bloomfield Drive in Union Park.

A 29-year-old woman was traveling south on Dean Road while a 21-year-old man from Orlando was riding his motorcycle in the opposite direction.  When the driver of the car attempted to turn left onto Bloomfield Drive, the front of the motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the vehicle. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The crash is under investigation.

Left Turns in Front of Motorcycles

Getting hit by a motorist making a left turn is every motorcyclist’s nightmare. Many riders may not be aware of the dangers involved, but it’s not uncommon for the driver of a passenger vehicle, pickup truck, or other vehicle to not see the motorcycle coming toward them. That’s because motorcycles are much smaller than passenger vehicles and have a lower profile, which makes them less visible to other drivers. Because of this lack of visibility, left-turn collisions happen quite often.

There are several other reasons why left turn accidents involving cars and motorcycles occur frequently. They include:

  • Distracted driving. Driving requires a person’s full concentration. That’s why drivers should avoid texting, eating, drinking, reading, and engaging in other activities that can take their focus off the road. When they’re not paying attention to the roadways, they may fail to see a motorcycle coming toward them or make other mistakes that can lead to an accident.
  • Breaking the law. Some drivers purposely engage in reckless behavior, such as drinking and driving, speeding, and failing to yield. These actions can cause a motorist to cause a collision, particularly a left-turn crash with a motorcycle.
  • Sometimes accidents are caused by mistakes or a lack of judgment or perception. It is possible that the driver may see the motorcycle but make an error in judging the bike’s distance or speed. This can cause the motorist to make the left turn too soon, making it so the motorcycle cannot slow down in time. The result can be a deadly crash.
